Summer 2012 Opportunities in Computing & Technology for Students in Massachusetts*Some activites sponsored by CAITE S.E.T in The City, April 28 The fourth annual S.E.T. in the City- A Day of Career Exploration in Science, Engineering & Technology for High School Girls will take place on Saturday, April 28th, 2012. Students begin the day at Boston University, travel to area venues including Harvard, Emmanuel, Simmons, Northeastern, and Biogen for lunch and laboratory activities, and end the day with an Omni show at the Museum of Science. The program will begin at 9:00 am and conclude at 6:00 pm. Participating students will take part in hands-on activities, hear from and interact with students and professionals in SET fields, learn about cutting edge research that will change the world, and find out how to prepare for careers in Science, Engineering, and Technology. Computer Science Summer Institute, June 24 - July 12 & July 22 -August 10 Google has created the Computer Science Summer Institute (CSSI). Up to 60 aspiring computer scientists will be selected to attend one of the all-expenses-paid CSSI sessions at either Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, California or Google's office in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This special institute will include an interactive and collaborative CS curriculum, as well as a unique residential experience in which studentscan build a network with other attendees. They will meet alumni from their schools and other Google engineers while immersing themselves in daily life at Google. Students will also enjoy technical talks by Googlers, lectures by guests from across the technology industry, and local area social activities. Artemis Project, June 25 - July 27 The Artemis Project is a free, five-week computer science summer program for rising 9th grade girls. Artemis introduces them to the creative thinking and problem-solving skills that are at the core of computer science. The program was founded in 1996 at Brown University and we launched the first program at BU last summer. It was a big success and we are very pleased to offer it again this summer. Smith Summer Science and Engineering Program, July 1-28 The sciences and engineering offer so many great opportunities for girls. Explore your interests this summer at one of the top-rated colleges in the country—learn about the biology of women athletes, design with engineers or unlock the mystery of your own DNA. We’ll help you decide which scientist you want to be. Open to girls entering grades 9 through 12 in fall 2011. Admission deadline May 1. Summer Science Pathways for Girls, July 6 - 13 BU is hosting an exciting one-week, residential program for high school girls entering their junior or senior year in September 2012. Summer Pathways, now in its sixth year, targets girls from Boston area high schools who show promise and/or interest in science, math, or engineering. The year the program will be held from July 6 -13th. Tuition is $575 and includes room, board, all travel and activities. Scholarships of up to $500 are available to students with demonstrated financial need. Participants will live in a BU dormitory, and during this week, will have the opportunity to engage in many hands on science activities and gain first hand knowledge of a wide range of careers in STEM disciplines. Participants visit laboratories, engage in science exploration activities, listen to career panels, visit local companies, learn about the college admissions process, and go on science-related field trips to various local destinations, such as the Museum of Science and the New England Aquarium. Tech Savvy Event, July 23 - 27 Tech Savvy is a one-week program for middle school girls that focuses on Computing, Engineering and Technology. Sponsored by the Boston Area Girls STEM Collaborative, the program allows students to visit a different college campus each day for hands on activities. iD Tech Camp iD Tech Camps offer summer computing camps for kids and teens (ages 7-17) at various locations in Massachusetts on college campuses, in Amherst, Waltham, Cambridge, and North Andover. Topics include video game design, programming, apps, robotics, and more. Week-long day and overnight camps start at $799/week. *Robotics Camps at Springfield Technical Community College, July-August Three different summer camps will be held at Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) for middle- and early high-school students (ages 12-16) in the Springfield area. Each introduces students to robotics, computer tools, engineering, and art in a hands-on way that encourages problem-solving and team-building. Located on 35 acres of the Springfield Armory National Historic Site, camps include fun activities, campus tours, and field trips.
